MUN at the Movies

By Kavyaa Shah

IN COMMITTEE:

THE CHAIR checks their list and starts marking delegates as present. To their surprise, the enthusiastic delegates of BIS have all joined on time, with their hands ready to be raised.

THE CHAIR:

(confidently)

Okay delegates, let's begin. Motion to open Debate.

The delegates begin to raise their hands in support of the motion.

THE CHAIR:

This motion passes. Today we will be discussing the topic of climate change. Are there any other motions?

THE DELEGATE OF FRANCE:

(raises virtual hand, speaks when chair says they have the floor)

Motion to discuss why climate change is a topic that must be addressed by the committee immediately.

A few moments of silence follow as delegates consider whether they would like to participate or not, however before they can make a decision, the Chair passes the motion “by the discretion of the Chair”.

THE CHAIR:

Who would like to speak for this motion?

The delegates of France, Germany, US and Canada raise their virtual hands.

THE CHAIR:

The delegates of France, Germany, US and Canada, you are recognized. We will also have the delegate of Australia. The order is written on the screen. Delegate of France you have the floor.

The delegate of the United States unmutes and begins to discuss their country’s views on the issues, as well as what action they are taking against climate change.

THE CHAIR:

Well said, delegate. Um, the delegate of Canada, you have the floor.

THE DELEGATE OF CANADA:

(after discussing Canada’s climate change protection methods)

I would also like to add that the United States is responsible for some of the most pollution and their hypocritical delegate may not judge the countries that are truly making an effort.

THE CHAIR:

(annoyed)

Okay delegate, decorum. That last comment was completely unnecessary.

THE DELEGATE OF THE US:

Do I have permission to retaliate?

THE CHAIR:

No, of course not, delegate! This is a moderated caucus, there is no back and forth debating. The delegate of Germany, the floor is yours.

The delegate of Germany talks on the topic at hand, but goes over time and is cut off by the Chair.

THE CHAIR:

Thank you, delegate. Point well made. Delegate of the US, the floor is yours.

(no response)

(louder) You may begin, delegate.

THE DELEGATE OF THE US:

(embarrassed)

Oh, yes, sorry! While I am aware of the high levels of pollution from the United States, we intend to follow through with certain plans to help with the high level of carbon emissions.I yield my time to the chair.

THE CHAIR:

Okay, thank you delegate. Are sure you have nothing to add?

(no response)

Delegate? Okay moving on.

Are there any other delegates that wish to speak on this topic or are there any other motions?

THE DELEGATE OF CANADA:

Motion to have a back and forth debate with the delegate of the US.

THE CHAIR:

(annoyed)

Delegate! That is not a valid motion!
