Committee Article 3- JCPOA

The JCPOA committee's third session began with a directive issued by Israel and the United States and France and Iran. Both directives were undoubtedly unreasonable, and both were met with backlash.

The session began with a directive initiated by Israel and the USA. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, The UAE, Kuwait, Spain, Iraq, and of course Israel and The USA were signatories. The directive suggested that Iran must be provided with humanitarian aid including exports of food supplies, medical supplies, educational supplies and safety supplies. Iran must also be allowed to trade items (including oil) that are approved by all UN countries in order to ensure that they would be able to drive their economy. Along with this there would be an Iran-Israel deal settling disputes in order for the protection of both countries’ citizens. Iran and The US would \have to engage in a discussion regarding easing sanctions and gaining Iranian compliance to its obligations to the deal. Ensured protection of U.S military vehicles from Iranian forces, locating terrorist organisations, and the IAEA investigation of Iran’s nuclear program were also a part of the directive.

The United States and Israel suspected France of collaborating with Iran for personal benefit and intended to establish a covert organisation to probe France and Iran was required to make settlements for the damage they had caused - including the loss of US ships, drones, and airships, and cyberattacks and terrorist financing. They also had to release the detainees from the United States, as this is contrary to US policy. Although the United States included certain reasonable clauses in this order, they did not lift the sanctions against Iran, which was something many committee members found to be a questionable decision.

France, Iran, Turkey, and Germany, presented the next directive. Despite the fact that most of committee acted as signatories, it was once again unattainable, beginning with clauses that must be fulfilled in 120, 60, or even 15 days - an unreasonable time frame for such big asks. They also required the US to reimburse Iran with a one-trillion-dollar payment for all damages. France, Turkey, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Germany, Iran, Bulgaria, Greece, and Estonia all decided to suspend all trade relations with the United States if the conditions are not implemented. Will the countries be able to live without the United States and its resources, particularly in the event of a pandemic? This directive is plainly unachievable, and drew criticism from many other delegates that ended committee today with quite the bang.
